Nacre Dials

Nacre, also known as mother-of- pearl, is an impure calcium carbonate biomineral secreted by mollusks in alternating layers, forming a protective structure around them. Not only is this material strong, but the way light interacts with these layers creates the characteristic iridescent sheen, or luster, associated with nacre.

Scrimshaw is the art of etching designs onto bone, ivory or seashells, traditionally practiced by sailors on whaling ships during long voyages. These needle etched designs were then filled with pigments like soot or ink for contrast.

Having been a sailor most of my life, employing the technique of scrimshaw to decorate nacre watch dials is a natural extension of who I am.
